Boat Statistics
The model: Built over several year from the molds of Jon Zimmerman. During the off-season, Jon and Mitch decided to solve both of their problems. Jon had a boat that he didn't have time to finish and Mitch had no time to build a new boat for 2008. The formed a partnership in which Jon painted the hull he had been building and Mitch would add the wings, do the detail work and put most of his own gear and setup in it for racing in 2008. At the end of the season, Jon will have a finished boat returned to him for future racing and Mitch will have had a year to build a new boat of his own for 2009. Hopefully it will be a win-win situation.
The real boat: Ed Cooper Jr and Sr had this boat built to keep pace with the modern turbine field of boats that had been leaving them in their wake for several years. They had for years been the only piston boat in the field, running their turbo Allison. The boat showed promise in the latter part of 2002, running record speeds in San Diego at season's end. It bested the whole turbine fleet in the season opener in 2003 and has remained competitive ever since. Mitch Evans gave up the cockpit to Jimmy King in 2004 after a very successful first full season and performance has dropped off somewhat, but their piston power remains a crowd favorite.
